Auf this route have been set by the Governing Mayor Wowereit and the Environment Senator Lompscher in a climate protection agreement between the State of Berlin and Vattenfall in 2020.
need a million tons of wood per year for the Swedish energy company within reason. Since this amount of wood breaking previous assertions can not be constructed from the vicinity of Berlin, Vattenfall reaches for Africa. One million tons of rubber-tree wood chips Vattenfall wants to import in the years to come from Liberia. The Dutch firm Buchanan Renewable Energy (BRE) proposes to in the West African country of rubber trees and transported them for shipment to the coast. The
in Liberia existing rubber plantations have been created as a result of destroyed rain forest. And so Vattenfall and the beautiful city of Berlin can their CO2 performance dramatically increased pressure on the rainforests, the people have no electricity in Liberia and now no longer enough firewood to cook with it. Estimates that Silas Siakor, director of the Institute for Sustainable Development in Hauptstaft Monrovia, summarized the consequences of Vattenfall's rubber plant in Liberia is a deal.
that energy from wood is generally very difficult, and reached to close borders, the study also shows "Bioenergy from wood: the green lie - Wood-based bioenergy: the green lie "of the International Forest Coalition Global Forest Coalition.

Mr Tuomo Hatakka, CEO
tuomo.hatakka @ vattenfall.com info@vattenfall.de,
Dear Mr. Mayor Wowereit, Madam Senator Lompscher Environment, Mr Chairman Hatakka,
the planned massive burning of tropical timber in Berlin's large power plants I reject. For biomass heating plants in Berlin Lichtenberg and the Mark Brandenburg district Reinickendorf including Beifeuerung of wood in the existing plants (Reuter and West Moabit) Vattenfall claims to need a million tons of wood per year. This amount of wood can be either locally produced or designed in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible manner. The
Use of residues and waste wood from the surrounding countryside is only a small share, as more wood per year may be hit than grows and compete now several dozen biomass power plants in Brandenburg with other industries such as paper and board production to wood resources . In general, the material use of environmentally friendly and energy-efficiency reasons in each case, the energy recovery is preferable.
Vattenfall has signed a contract with the Dutch company Buchanan Renewable Energy (BRE) to import one million tons of rubber tree wood from West Africa. The wood should come from rubber plantations in Liberia, which emerged as a result of destroyed rain forest are. In the country, according to experts is not enough wood for export. Charcoal from rubber tree wood is used by the population as a fuel for cooking. Already, the timber sales and exports of BRE have had serious economic impact in the cities of the country who rely on charcoal. The charcoal prices have doubled this.
Thus, the pressure on the forests in Liberia continues to rise - to search for firewood and to convert them into rubber plantations. On existing plantations ruling catastrophic conditions, including widespread child labor. The United Nations attested even "slave-like working conditions," "Lawlessness" and heavy pollution 1.)
Meanwhile, does the construction of a 36 MW electric power plant in the capital, Monrovia, no progress for a year. Buchanan Renewable (BR), another branch of the Dutch company should, on behalf of the Government to improve the disastrous electricity in Monrovia. Also, the power plant will be fueled by wood chips. It is feared that there is much more attractive for BR to sell the wood chips to Vattenfall as they use locally to generate electricity in Monrovia. Liberia is one of the poorest countries on earth.
also swallows the long transportation of rubber tree wood - from the interior of Liberia to the port on the coast and then over 5 500 kilometers from Liberia to Berlin - enormous amounts of fuel and is very harmful for the climate and ecology. Rubber wood is not a useless waste product, as claimed by Vattenfall and BRE. The wood is used for years for the production of kitchen utensils, toys and furniture and imported in this form in large quantities in Germany.
is totally unacceptable, it also means that Vattenfall and the Berlin Senate until now examine criteria for whether and how the required biomass can be produced "sustainably." Generally, it is questionable whether sustainability criteria to apply in a country like Liberia are. Many important factors such as indirect land use changes, ie the displacement of existing activities and the impact on food prices are not at all to master it.
I therefore request to stop the construction of biomass heating plants in Berlin immediately, including any plans for imports of wood and other biomass for energy production.
Sincerely

love girlfriends and friends in Europe,
Next week, the EU could decide on a strict ban on imports of illegal timber - but powerful groups try to prevent this. The
Forest habitat and source of life for many people and animals. Without it life would not be possible on Earth. The strong demand for cheap wood is a major driver of illegal logging and has the extinction of rare species, the increase in corruption and organized crime result.
The EU Parliament has voted recently for tougher measures against illegal timber imports. Now take the EU Council of Ministers and the Commission in the matter, but votes against coming mainly from Member States in which the timber industry plays a major role, are now trying to weaken the important controls.
Only a massive public protest may be the Ministers convinced to vote for the law. Sign the petition and request the EU to ban illegal timber imports and protect our forests. Forward this e-mail immediately after that to friends and acquaintances. Once the petition has 50 000 signatures, it is passed before the vote on the EU Council:

It is estimated that 20-40% the global timber production from illegal sources. Every year about 10-15 billion € flowing into the pockets of the timber mafia. That such laws have some positive effect is seen on the example of the United States, but the EU is one of the largest Timber importers and as long as the illegal timber trade is not prohibited is, they directly for a share of 3 billion euros this black market is responsible.
The impact of this industry on society and the environment are devastating and can lead to money laundering, corruption and violence. Illegal deforestation endangers our environment and robbing people and animals their habitat.
Last year, timber companies trying to water down the ban, and in cooperation with timber importers, they have managed to delay the legislation prevails. But this year, the EU Parliament adopts stricter laws and only some sectors of the wood industry as well as countries like Great Britain, Denmark, Belgium and Spain support the ban.
Let us avoid that win are those that cheer on the misery and destruction. Together we can prevent illegal timber imports and protect our forests and their inhabitants. Sign the petition and tell your friends about the campaign:
